Press buttons from Germany are imported in fairly large quantities. They are packed in cardboard boxes of 5 gross in oilcloth lined cases containing 300 gross.

COTTON THREAD. This trade is practically the monopoly of a

combine of the largest British and Belgian manufacturers,

who were until the war represented by Messrs Siemssen and

Company, Messrs Arnhold Karberg and Co., and mesars Carlowitz

and Co., The combine has now its own representative in Hong-

kong.

Japanese manufacturers have been making determined

efforts to introduce cheap brands on the market, but in this

case superior quality combined with an established reputa-

tion has so far proved successful.

COTTON STOCKINGS AND SOCKS. Imports from Germany have been

fast disappearing before the competition of local and Japan- ese products, which have the advantage of cheap labour. The

same remark applies to TOWELS.

TRIMMINGS (COTTON AND IMITATION SILK). An increasing quantity of these, almost solely from Germany is imported each year.

NOILYARN. There is a growing demand. France, which was formerly the chief supplier, has been supplanted by Italy.
